Will update with more pictures later but suffice it to say this week has all been pretty positive but there isn't a lot to say!!
Work is busy, the museum has lots of cool stuff, DC is too hot, and I'm enjoying volunteering at the English Center!!
I did go to the Postal Museum with a friend though and let me just say...it's pretty sensational. Would highly recommend this 10/10 museum. They have lots of interactive exhibits where you can scan packages and practice typing zip codes into a machine, and they have Mr. ZIP who is apparently the Zip Code Mascot. The interpretive label described him as one of the most recognizable figures from advertising which I feel like is...perhaps a little overconfident in Mr. ZIP's cultural clout but I support him nonetheless.
They also have Owney, the real taxidermied dog mascot of the National Railway Mail Service. I appreciate Owney's service but I kind of wish his stuffed body was not in this museum. That is the literal only flaw of the National Postal Museum god bless.
Also met up with Mary Toni, someone I did the Japan program with, and had a really nice cathartic chat. It was so odd to see someone from that program in a totally different context but we commiserated over how rough getting adjusted to DC is at first (we both said that the culture shock of DC, what with the political culture and everything, feels even greater than we felt during the Japan program. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that we were with a program in Japan though, whereas here we have to "hack it" a lot more independently.) and it felt really good to get to hear that someone else has been having the same feelings that I have. Who would have thought, huh.
I hope all your weeks are off to a good start!
Also I'm very excited to see some fine friends in just a couple of weeks :^)
Hey what’s wrong with a taxidermie dog? Don’t be livist, he’s just as much a dog as any dog roaming the street. Alsoooo, I literally NEVER heard or seen Mr.Zip but I still respect him as a man and as our zip code mascot.
Omg I love mr ZIP already.. can’t say I’ve seen him before though but that’s 100% on me I gotta go there next time I’m in dc! And that’s verryyy interesting that the culture shock in dc is that striking :-0
