HELLO FRIENDS APOLOGIES THAT I HAVE BEEN NOT VERY ACTIVE ONLINE BUT I HOPE YOU ARE ALL HAVING WONDERFUL WEEKS
Ok so I actually was going to write this post about some shenanigans I got up to this weekend but it all ended up being a bit longer and less interesting than I thought it would be so here's some things that have happened to me recently or that I have been liking:
- I went to a Korean folk percussion concert on Saturday with a friend (who was gracious enough to come with me even though I know it wasn't particularly interesting for her). It was really cool the artist's name is Kim So Ra and there were a few other musicians playing things like the gayageum (which is like a big zither/Japanese koto) and piri (a double reeded instrument!! It sounded like a saxophone in my opinion)
-It is seeming more and more likely that I am going to be interviewing this woman that I wrote a paper about freshman year because she lives out near DC and she donated some materials related to lesbian film to our collection. I am excited but super nervous aaaaa!!
- I actually took some pictures of the museum and some places around DC as I was walking to and from work last week :-)
- I had some pretty good banh mi at this place called "Abe's Cafe" which is right across from Ford's Theatre and right next to a building labeled "House Where Lincoln Died." As everyone knows, Abraham Lincoln loved Vietnamese food and ran this Vietnamese cafe in his spare time during his tragically cut short tenure as president. His death was so tragic but at least I can rest easy knowing that the place he took his final breaths was close enough to smell the delicious scent of pho and bun dishes being cooked right next door.
- tonight I went to a Rick Riordan talk with my friend who really likes his books, which I thought some of you would be interested in. He was talking about the new Trials of Apollo book which comes out tomorrow I believe and some of the new books being published under his publishing company - like, books about other kinds of mythology written by other authors.
I remember some of what he talked about (though it meant very little to me) but I don't want to write anything that might be a spoiler here, so if you're curious let me via private message I suppose. Someone asked a question during the Q&A about whether Percy actually knows how to swim properly if he just manipulates the water, which I thought was fun. But Rick just said that he took swim lessons in high school so he must know how to swim.
Also the people from his staff called him "Uncle Rick" which I thought was weird. Seems like a nice guy though! Apparently he lives in Boston?
- Finally, this weekend I watched all of Fleabag, which is truly incredible and I would highly recommend if you haven't seen it. It just won a ton of Emmys and it's only two very short seasons (6 episodes each)
It's about a woman "navigating love and life in London" or whatever but it's so much more than what that description makes it sound like. There's a lot of fourth-wall breaking and a ton of emotional depth to each character, this show made me feel things so deeply so quickly and I think everyone should watch it.
Here's some fun moments:
Omg Uncle Rick! That is what the fandom calls him, hahah it’s not weird I promise. But I’m jelly you got to see him in the flesh even though you could care less whether you did or not. Also are you joking about the Abraham thing? If so, I didn’t know he liked Vietnamese food!
Uncle Rick!!!!
