I LOVE snacks, so this is a really fun topic to me. Maybe if I liked them less than my health would be better, but we don't have to talk about that. Idk if any of any of you guys watch Bon Appétit vids (before they got into all this hot water, that is...) but there's this series where a baker tries to recreate classic snacks. But I always thought it was weird because she said she grew up in a household where they didn't really eat junk food.. and no there wasn't a really a point to me mentioning that, just some thoughts.
Right now my favorite snacks are goldfish and cheez-its. I wish I had some takis though...
Evidently I could go on and on about the different snacks I've enjoyed through the years, but I thought a fun type to focus on would be nostalgic snacks.
In elementary school, one of the best parts of the day was lunch on certain days where I was allowed to buy ice cream. I actually got in trouble with my mom because I was only supposed to do that once a week... but I didn't stick too much to that rule. My favorite ice creams were Cookie Cones, cookies and cream ice cream sandwiches, and rainbow popsicles. I miss Cookie Cones the most. I think the main thing that drives this is the fact that I never have seen it outside of school. Not in gas stations, not at the grocery store, not at the corner store... A rare find in my mind. Now I'm looking it up and in fact I'm not crazy. There's a Facebook page called "bring back cookie cones 2020". It's by Bluebell which is a Texas company so I'm curious to know if you guys had them ever?
The other major category in cafeteria junk food is chips. My favs were hot cheetos (in all their forms) and these things called Fantastix. I remember with strange fondness being in 11th and 12th grade and eating in the library (HA because I didn't have any friends at first in Idaho and then in 12th grade more often the friends I made would join me :) ) and having baked hot cheetos. I don't care what some people may say, baked chips are good. I prefer them in a lot of cases to regular chips. Fantastix are in the realm of cookie cone to me because I would rarely see them outside school. Their flavor is simply immaculate. I think one time I saw them on Amazon but other then that they don't seem to grace the grocery store aisles. Quite mythic imo.
Honorable mentions (korean snacks that I loved)
chocopie - this one thankfully is not short in supply, but it's a real classic... I haven't had it in so long!
jelly cup things - they can kind of seem gross but I love these guys, you can get real creative about how to eat them. lol on the picture I chose the page was talking about them being recalled as a choking hazard.
yakult - i have a distinct memory with these and being at some aunt's house with a bear skin rug and watching Dexter's laboratory. My mom is super against single use plastic so that may be why we never have these anymore..
honey chips - I really can't remember if this is the actual type but I'm pretty sure that's it
ah those were the days when you could buy ice cream during lunch. I don't think we had cookie cones but we had rainbow popsicles and ice cream sandwiches and creamsicles (my personal fav).
I've never loved takis but sometimes I wonder if I'm sleeping on them. also have you ever had hot fries??? they look like those fantastix.
jelly cups are so good! I didn't know they were a choking hazard but ig I'm not surprised.
Dude cookie cone was my drug of choice. I felt like a big bawler when i would pull out my dollar (usually it was change my parents found around the house, but if they really remembered it was a dollar coin or 4 quarters i felt bougie on those Fridays). I think those Friday treats will hold a special spot in my heart. But I saw fantastix, but never tried. I don’t really like chips unless they’re salt and pepper or hot cheetos. And no I’ve definitely ate in the bathroom a couple of times (like maybe 10 times in all of high school)! I just didn’t wanna go to the cafeteria and one of the schools they would herd…
@naoni
Bring cookie cone back 2020!! Yeah it is strange that they would stop since it’s such a yummy treat :( and yeah I was scarred after trying to socialize on my first day in the cafeteria ... but I feel like In this school at least plenty of kids ate in the cafeteria, thankfully I never had to resort to the bathroom stall And I wish I could’ve drank them like that! Now that I’m an “adult” no one could stop me mwahahah
Doooood! My mom would only give me ice-cream money on Friday’s and Cookie Cone was fav!! I completely forgot about em until I read this. Tbh, if they sold cookie cones in stores, the owner of bluebell would become the next Jeff besos. I feel like a lot of new kids avoid the cafeteria like it’s the plague (I often opted to eating in classrooms or in the library). Alsoooo, yakult is the best! I remember I would have em when I would visit my friend’s house but didn’t know the name. But recently (like 1st year or so), I realized that yakults were the drinks I would drank when I was younger. The yakult pic is how I imagine you drank…
