This Saturday, I went to another concert, this one being Angel Olsen. I went alone yet again, and again it was a positive experience :-). I don't think her sound is for everyone, but please, if you listen and like it, let me know! Otherwise, you can keep your thoughts to yourself >:-(. Personally I didn't like her music at first. But with time, it can grow on you. She has a very distinct voice, sort of warbly, and a lot of her songs are pretty calm and lyrical.
She was touring for her latest album, and I'll just say a couple of comments and thoughts about the concert.
- The opener was a group/artist called Small Hands. If I'm being honest, I didn't think their music/sound was anything that special. Like it seemed like (this sounds harsh but...) nondescript Frankie Cosmos or something. I could see myself liking a couple of their songs but in general, they were ok but not remarkable, ya know? They had the women's college lewk, you know what I mean.
- The venue was very cool! It was more of a venue I'm used to with a general standing space and then mezzanine area. I was glad they had that because I HATE being in the general standing area, particularly so if I don't have any friends with me. At concerts, people don't give a hoot if you're short and can't see.
- It was funny because in Paris people really are out here just reading whenever and whereever. Which I respect immensely. Before the concert started people would just be standing and reading. I wish it were more acceptable to do that in the United States.
- Angel Olsen was phenomenal! She sounds like the recordings or better and it was also good because I sat where I could see her up pretty close. She kind of has a horrid hair cut (microbangs that get shorter with time) but otherwise I love her look.
- I don't know if I vibe with her personality onstage that much but that's ok. I kind of got the feeling if we met she'd be mean, but maybe I'm just underestimating her... I would hope so, but as they say, never meet your heroes.
-This album in particular had a lot of string instrumentation, so it was cool because they had a violinist and cellist!
These are some of my picks by her if you are interested (again, please only talk to me about them if you have something positive to say :') , as some of you know, I get very sensitive about the music I like, especially when certain people so ruthlessly tear it apart
- Spring | All Mirrors
- Shut Up Kiss Me | My Woman
- Heart Shaped Face | My Woman
- Iota | Burn Your Fire For No Witness (also, side note, I love this album title)
- Only With You | Burn Your Fire For No Witness
- The Sky Opened Up | Half Way Home
- Acrobat | Half Way Home
Other than Saturday, I've been pretty calm recently.
French kids are on school break this week and the next so I haven't had to babysit. Next week I'll also have school off! I'm going to Strasbourg for a day and then Oxford/London for a couple of days to see Claire and Kristiana!!! I'm very excited :-) Also, I'm excited for Valentine's Day. Mostly because I have a very pink outfit planned and I want to make choco strawbs. I love the Valentine's aesthetic maybe a bit too much....
In other news, I FINALLY resolved the whole no data/service phone issue! In the end, with no begging or tears required, they didn't just fix my phone, but they gave me a brand new one! Which is good because in theory I should be able to make it last another 4 years.
Please stop saying choco strawbs, it sounds and looks horrible T-T. Anyways, I’m glad you like this artist a lot. In my humble onion, I think it’s really good/fun to be passionate about an artist and their content :))
oof brutal music critic Rachel e. takes small hands to task 😤 i kinda like Angel Olson ! well, the few songs i heard, kinda like you said i think her stuff had to grow on me a little but the songs I know (her most popular) are bops. I'll take a listen to the other ones you recommended too. also im still impressed at your commitment to going to shows alone it makes me want to do that more too :') the Valentine's day aesthetic feels like it was made for you
