I'm not a hippie, I'm just a girl! (Round 2)

Updated: Jun 10, 2020

So, originally I was going to edit my last post and write all the things I wanted to write but now it's Friday again so I guess I'll just make a new post.

Last week was short study tour for all DIS students. My class went to Kolding and Odense in Western Denmark. Because we had two birthdays during study tour (one on the 3rd and one on the 4th) and my birthday was the day before study tour, our professor was nice enough to bring us all flødeboller which are chocolate covered marshmallows with a cookie at the bottom. If you've ever had Mallomars they're essentially that. They're very popular here. Then on our bus ride over we learned the two Danish birthday songs.

The first place we went to when we got off the bus was the Lego House, which is really just the most amazing place. When we walked in they had this giant tree made entirely of Legos. I think they called it their "Tree of Life". Something else that I thought was really cool was that on the leaves they built little scenes out of Legos.

On this leaf there were monkeys having a birthday party

After our tour of the Lego House we ate lunch at their MiniChef Cafe. To order lunch we were given menus where every menu item had a corresponding Lego piece, so to order we basically had to build what we wanted. After we built our lunch we stuck it in a machine that read our order and sent it to the kitchen. Once our lunch was ready we could get it from this conveyor belt with dancing robots in front of it. Overall, I had a great time at the Lego House. From a personal standpoint it was so cool but I also thought it fit nicely into what we're learning about in my core education class.

This was the food that they had at mini chef. It was surprisingly pretty good. Under that tray is another tray with pork and mushroom farro

For dinner we went to an Italian restaurant and our program even paid for a round of drinks. Besides all the fun stuff we got to see on the trip I think the food was my favorite part. Since I'm living in an apartment I have to cook for myself and I don't think I'm an awful cook but you forget how good food can taste sometimes when you always have to make it.

The next day we went to Kolding Tower. It wasn't related to our class in the slightest but I liked that we got to do something a little touristy. Even though I’m not a huge fan of history, I had a decent time. Sometimes I sorta wish that I was more into history so I could appreciate places like that more but I did think the architecture was pretty cool.

this was the view from the top!

We went to a couple more places after that. We did this tinkering lego workshop where we got to build stuff and it was so much fun! I always forget that I used to be a stem kid and sometimes I wonder if I was actually meant to do engineering or something like that. But anyways, we also went to this theatre/interactive space and got to learn about how children can explore life through theater. I was surprised by how similar the philosophy of Tinderbox (that’s the name of the theater place) is to Danish educational philosophy. I don’t feel like I’ve learned a lot a lot about Danish education yet because we’ve only been here for a month but I think it’s really cool how child-centered everything is here. Of course, like with any system, there are some issues too but overall I think that the Danes really get children and their needs and that’s so cool! I’m interested to see what special education is like here though because I haven’t heard that much about it and well I’m skeptical to say the least.

Then on Wednesday we went back to Cope and did a couple of other activities at DIS. Overall, I had a pretty good time and I’m looking forward to getting to know the people in my core course better.

Since Rachel mentioned it I guess I’ll talk about my birthday. The night before my birthday my flatmates, Naoni, and some other pals threw me a surprise party. I was quite surprised! And touched cause we’ve only really known these people for 3/4 weeks. Later that night we went out. My roommate was very adamant about me turning 21 in the club lol but because we stopped on the way to pee I ended up turning 21 in a Max Burgers✌️. And honestly I wouldn’t want it any other way :). It’s wild to me that I turned 21 in a different country. I mean it’s not really a big deal and I didn’t have to do anything ya know but I was just thinking like you only turn 21 once and for the rest of my life I’ll carry that experience with me. Especially because it’s kind of a big milestone.

After peeing in Max’s Burgers we went to this club called Hive. It’s one of the last discotheques in Copenhagen. It was pretty wack tbh but I still enjoyed the experience.

The next morning, I had brunch with my flatmates. Then a couple of us went to the Round Tower and the Danish Design Museum.

This week was pretty busy. I've been slacking on reading the blog since I've been here which makes me sad. I feel like I've been slacking on a lot of things lately tho :/. I need a couple of solid reflection days to recenter. We'll see if that happens. But right now we're currently in Vienna! We just got here tonight. Hopefully it'll be an adventure.

I think this is my new longest post.

Here are some other pics from this week and last week:

ooh wow you have been up to a lot! Don't feel bad about being a bit behind on other things bc you're doing a lot and its draining.

The lego house sounds so so cool (i'm mega impressed by that whole food station situation) and yeh you're right. It's cool how child-centered things over there sound. What do you mean though that you're skeptical about how they approach students/kids with special needs?
