Happy Storm Area 51 Day

Updated: Jan 3, 2020

This week was a solid ok. I think I'm settling into this whole school thing, but I'm still trying to figure out how to get on top of my work/life/life with work.

A lot of hectic things have happened this week. On Tuesday, in photography class, our professor taught us how to develop film. I was really excited because I wanted to see how my pictures turned out, but oh boy getting to the developing stage was a long process. When you develop film, you need to use the darkroom to get your film out of the metal canister that it comes in and onto a film reel. But because there aren't any lights in the darkroom you need to have an idea of what you're doing before you get in there. To simulate this process, our teacher had us close our eyes and practice getting old film onto a reel. Then, she put us into pairs and sent us into the darkrooms to do it on our own.

To open film canisters you use a bottle opener to pry off the top. But I couldn't even get mine off. It must've taken me at least 20 minutes of trying until it finally came off. By then, my partner was already on the second step, so I was trying to catch up. It's not really a time sensitive process but once you open your canisters you can't really leave the room unless you want to sacrifice film. So even if one person were to get their film on the reel, they would have to wait for the other person to finish, so you can both put them in this light blocking container. And I didn't want to make my partner wait ya know.

In the end, neither one of us really had to wait though because we both struggled. It took us so long to get our film ready that our professor came to check on us lol. It must've taken us at least an hour until we were finally done. And that was just the first part of developing.

Even though being stuck in the darkroom with basically a stranger was not ideal, it was definitely a good bonding experience. Our negatives turned out pretty cool, too. Even though we dropped them on the floor before developing them.

The other hectic thing that happened this week was that there was a giant centipede in Aboni and May's room. It was disgusting!!! And it was crawling all around and somehow I was summoned to kill it. Eventually, I did kill it but I don't even know what I would if I was faced with one again.

The rest of the week was fine. Today, there was a climate strike in Northampton and we got to walk in the streets downtown.

Oh and the other day, Caitlin, Anna and I made veggie sushi (well mostly Caitlin and Anna did-I mostly just ate the sushi)! It was so good.

What a talented duo they are!
