Calm before the storm?

Updated: Jan 22, 2020

Hello my beautiful blogging buddies! This week has been good and pretty calm. On Saturday I walked quite a ways to this area of Paris called Passy. People say it’s part of the snob areas, so it’s pretty nice. I also saw the Eiffel Tower a lot on this walk! I was meant to meet Doris to see Little Women (ou les filles de Docteur March en français, also I was going to rewatch bc I thought it’s be funny in French and Doris wanted to haha). But unfortunately she slept in and we missed it 😓 nonetheless I met with some other friends later that night for some falafel!

Sunday I was being a bum and once it hit 4pm I was like, ok.... I should get going.... I walked to Malika’s home and we had dinner and walked in a park. Her host mom told us not too because once she was there at night and almost had a run in with a drug user or something? But we went anyways 🤫 I ended up staying the night because it was dark and kind of far and I’m still out of luck with the phone service situation (but thanks to Naoni, hopefully I’ll get it fixed fully soon.)

The next day I went home and then had the task of starting my new semester! The Smith program doesn’t have classes start til Jan 20 and my class at the Sorbonne will be more like Jan 27. But I’m taking a class hosted by the Sarah Lawrence program so I start now. It’s a class called la Méditerranée Franco-Algérienne so it’ll explore the relationship of Mediterranean lands. I’m optimistic for the class and the prof is super cool :-)

Even though this semester is gearing up, par contre I haven’t even finished last semester 😫. My neuropsych exam is allegedly being emailed to us (the strikes continue..) but no word on that yet:/

Today I went to this for fun type atelier (workshop) put on by our program that’s aimed at helping us improve our accents. I thought it was actually pretty fun and it was cool because the prof explained a lot of linguistic terms I’ve heard of but never fully understood (like plosives and fricatives)

I forgot when this was but in the past week I also finally saw The Farewell! Like Erin said, truly heartwarming. It made me think of my grandmas and I admit I don’t watch a lot of Chinese films so the setting was very interesting.

I also saw some movies on Netflix so I’ll give them some impressions:

The Social Network : 7.2/10 this may just seem like a movie about mark Zuckerberg but it’s actually really well done! The story is wild but this came out in 2010 or something so a lot has happened I’m sure legally since. No matter how it may make me feel bad for zuckerberg tho billionaires are disgusting.

Precious: 7.3/10 this movie is pretty graphic in terms of the violence but it’s also a compelling story. I don’t know if it’s a true story, but I feel like it is.

Requiem for a Dream: 8.7/10 this movie was also v heavy and sad and graphic but it was also really weird and I either love or hate weird movies 🤪 the editing was very experimental and the most interesting plot line to me was the moms. Jean said he watched it before and it’s based on a book. The book he said was incredible but the movie in his opinion was unnecessarily moche. Considering I liked the movie though, I wonder how much I’d like the book!

wow it's wild how the strikes have affected your classes so much

new band name: plosive fractive

Social Network is one of my favorite movies of all time!! mostly the movie just made me feel bad for Eduardo but irl I think he's like a billionaire. Oh well I just watch it and think like: wow wouldn't it be messed up if Facebook were real and not something made up for this David Fincher movie

And I've never seen all of Precious. I've heard it's really good but I feel like it's one of those movies that I need to be in the right headspace to watch because I know how heavy it is. I had no idea it was…

Lol same (what Aboni said) I was really traumatized by the movie as a kid. Anyway, I’m interested to see requiem for a dream: I always listened to the OST so I wonder if I’ll like the movie as I do its music!
